Description

In an era dominated by rapid information exchange, algorithmic echo chambers, and commercialized superstitions, cultivating an active, inquiring mind has never been more urgent. Scientific Temper: Principles and Practice provides a clear, culturally grounded roadmap for navigating truth, doubt, and belief in contemporary life.

Drawing directly from the insights of Dr. Achuthsankar S. Nair’s work ‘ശാസ്ത്രബോധം കെടരുതേ!’, the course reframes science not merely as a collection of facts, but as an open-ended method of inquiry and self-correction. Through relatable real-world examples, it addresses topics such as the psychological mechanics of the placebo and nocebo effects, the commercialization of rituals, the difference between complementary medicine and evidence-backed diagnostics, and the revolutionary role of technology in women's emancipation.

The curriculum also examines the democratic and constitutional underpinnings of scientific curiosity, analyzing how Article 51A(h) of the Constitution of India harmonizes with fundamental freedoms of conscience. Moving into evolutionary biology and modern genomics, it highlights how genetic science disproves racial and caste hierarchies, advocating for a transition from the biological "survival of the fittest" to an ethical "survival of the weakest".

Finally, the course introduces a balanced, pluralistic worldview: recognizing when to deploy rigorous scientific scrutiny (the Look, Ask, Guess, Test & Talk method) and when to honor emotional, aesthetic, and historical forms of consciousness. The masterclass concludes with an actionable toolkit for the digital citizen, unpacking cognitive biases, dissecting prevalent logical fallacies, and teaching robust fact-checking techniques for social media and statistical reporting.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Understand Core Methodologies: Master the fundamental cycle of observation, hypothesis, empirical testing, and peer review (Look, Ask, Guess, Test & Talk).
  • Deconstruct Everyday Misconceptions: Distinguish empirical evidence from placebo effects, correlation-causation fallacies, and market-driven pseudoscience.
  • Navigate Health & Medical Evidence: Evaluate healthcare claims critically, recognizing the necessity of double-blind trials, dosage precision, and objective diagnostics.
  • Uphold Constitutional & Humanist Values: Appreciate scientific temper as a civic duty that reinforces biological equality, social justice, and constitutional secularism.
  • Engage with Digital Literacy: Identify deceptive data representations, recognize personal cognitive biases, and refute common fallacies without resorting to personal attacks (Ad Hominem).
